MQX East recap…

The past two weeks were a whirlwind.  I was at MQX East where I spent the week with some very talented quilters.. my students.  I always learn so much from them.  I launched a new class All Marked Up!  It was so much fun.  It was a round table discussion on marking tools and all 25 students participated.  It was such a great class I can’t wait to “teach” it again.

Of course I taught ruler classes, my Divide and Design technique and Mastering the Mini.  Here are some pictures….

And of course, my Sis, Judy is there with me.  She’s the one that makes sure all the students are sufficiently caffeinated with coffee and chocolate..

We always try and squeeze in some fun as well…. Judy surprised me with a quilt she made me…. Love it!

Always a great time!  Can’t wait till next year!  Hope to see you there.

Did you know that…..

The Pittsburgh Knit and Crochet Festival has added quilting to their lineup.

If you are like me…. we quilters don’t just quilt…. we knit, crochet, felt, weave, dye and so much more!  Well, Pittsburgh Knit and Crochet festival has it all!  Come join me in my quilting classes or come learn something new!  I don’t have too many teaching gigs on the books this year but this is one of them AND I am teaching 4 hands on classes….

Totally Templates and   Gettin in the Groove for those who want to try their hand at templates.  They will transform your quilting!

Pebbles, Echoes, Crosshatches, Oh My!   This is my new fills class.  Most of you know that I have spacial issues, I have learned to deal with it by quilting everything!  But how do you know what fills to use and how big/small to make them?  This class will help you out with those decisions.

I would love to see you all there!!

Houston… here I come!

Thank you all for the comments about what you like to listen to while quilting.  I enjoyed reading all of them.  I am going to have to try the audio books.

I am currently getting ready to go to Houston and hopefully the rain won’t pose a problem for getting in.  At the beginning of last week, I set a goal of finishing a quilt before I left and I am proud to say, I did it!  Here is a picture…. this is one for my book…. thank you to Barb and Mary  for donating the fabric from their new fabric line…. Lavish.  They are debuting the fabric at Market as we speak in the Island Batik booth!

I am happy with how it turned out.  I challenged myself not to use feathers and I actually did not use any.  Yeah!!!

I am leaving for the airport in a bit and can’t wait to meet up with all of you!  This is my first year teaching at the show and am looking forward to it.  I will be setting up my classroom tomorrow around 10am if anyone is free and wants to help load machines for my Monday class.  🙂

See you all soon.

Bonding time!

As many of you know, I have recently become a HandiQuilter Ambassador.  My new Fusion came to me in May and I was quite excited and ready to jump in.

Now, those of you who teach will understand…. I don’t get a lot of time to quilt.  😦   I know, you are all thinking, poor Lisa.  A lot of my time is spent on class preparation and developing new classes.  My online business also keeps me hustling.  So while I had a chance to play a little  once I got it set up, I didn’t have a lot of time.  This past week, I got a chance to quilt!  Yeah me….. Here is what I was working on….

Lots of fun!

Crunch Time!!

I will be on vacation next week.  Yippee!  Golf, Beach and Family! Doesn’t get better than that.  But in order to have a good time I am working like mad to try and get some things done.

I will filming my iQuilt classes the last week of August which requires, lots of prep work even though I have taught these classes tons of times.  But I am lucky that it helps me get to know my new HandiQuilter Fusion!

Having fun and I’m almost done!

Then its on to the next class…. make sure you watch for the launch of iQuilt!

Lost in Transit

Every quilters worst nightmare….. Let me preface this post by saying that I know that mistakes happen and items get lost… my frustration lies with the lack of communication and empathy during the 8 day investigation….

I packed up 3 boxes to send to Canada for a teaching gig.  Two of the boxes contained kits and small samples for the class, the third box contained my show quilts for a trunk show and rulers for the template class I was teaching.  I did not insure the box through UPS because I have private insurance on my quilts specifically for transit…  The first two boxes were received but the third never made it.  I realized this the day before I was to leave for Canada… the tracking stated that the box made it to Winnipeg but was being returned to the sender.  I called in hopes that I could intercept the box and still have it delivered to Sparrow Studioz.  I was told that the box had never left Harrisburg.  I informed the representative that I was looking at a UPS webpage that said they made it to Winnipeg.  I was told…”I have the most up to date software and I know how to use it better than you do, the box never left Harrisburg.”  My only real option at this point was to open an investigation which  I did.  I was told I might not hear anything for up to 8 days.

Sparrow Studioz and I called each day only to  be told the same thing…  an investigator will be in touch when and if they find the box.  It was during this time I found out that they ONLY investigate for 8 days.. if it is not located they send you a claim form.

Once I got home from the trip, I made a plea on social media for help and you all came through for me with a barrage of posts on UPS’s Facebook page!  I can’t thank you enough!   We quilters truly stick together.. ( my non quilter friends were amazed) My post was shared  499 times.  My friend Barb said we broke FB.  You all truly are the best.

Fast Forward to the 8th day…. no phone call…. that night I was desperate and thought I was never going to see my quilts again… I found the email address of the CEO of UPS and sent a well worded email asking him for help.  I didn’t think anything would come of it but it was worth a try.   The 9th day I received an email saying that the box wasn’t found and a claim form was going to be emailed to me.  GRRRR…. no phone call.  so sorry we lost your irreplaceable quilts but you are out of luck…. here is your stinkin claim form.  Cowardly…

I then got an email from Clarissa at Customer Relations in Atlanta saying that she is responding for the CEO and that  she will be my point of contact now.   I forwarded her pictures of the 5 quilts in the box.  At this point I had really lost hope they would be found because if the investigators couldn’t find it in 8 days how would she be able to.  I thought this was just to appease me and all of my wonderful friends on FB who also happened to email the CEO.  LOL

Later that day I received a call from UPS Canada…. they found the box in Lost and Found.  Sighhhhhh… we will be air shipping them to you and they should be there on Monday.

I couldn’t have gotten through this without all of you…. for my non quilter friends …. Diana Annis really put it into prospective…

A note for those who have not heard, Lisa Hagstoz Calle’s quilts that were lost by UPS were FOUND and are enroute back to her! For a non quilter this is not important. Think of it this way, your business life is all on your laptop. You’ve spent hours on the content. Important portions are not backed up externally. You are traveling for your job and within minutes your laptop and it’s contents are gone! How would you feel? How would it impact your business? This is an important recovery and I am thrilled for Lisa.

I don’t think these quilts will be traveling with my any longer unless I am driving somewhere. I urge you all to get your quilts appraised and insured, even though I quickly realized while crying on the phone to my insurance agent that the money does not help the emotional loss of something so important.

My friend Teri Donovan has a great plan when she sends her quilts places… make sure that the address is written on the box in such a way that a machine can’t rip it off.  Also, put it on the inside of the box and label your quilts… also make sure they are packed really well….

They are home safe and sound AND in good shape.

Quilt on, my Friends!

Sparrow Studioz

I am getting excited for my first ever trip to Canada!  I will be  at Sparrow Studioz July 8-11!  I will be teaching 2 ruler classes, the first is Totally Templates.  This is a beginner class.  The second is Gettin’ in the Groove.  In this class you will learn how to use the Quilter’s Groove rulers.  If that isn’t enough fun.. I am debuting the hands on version of Divide and Design.

Simple Nine Patch

Simple Nine Patch

We will be working on a simple nine patch block.  This is a 6 hour class where you will learn the technique of Divide and Design and then stitch out what you have designed.  It will be loads of fun.  Hope you can join me!
