This is the quilt that I entered into HMQS!  I always wanted to make a pink and black quilt and this was just the ticket.

Jump in with both Feet!!

I am working on getting ready to go to HMQS in Salt Lake City, which I can’t wait to get there and see all of my quilty friends.  (If you haven’t signed up for any classes, you can sign up on site)  I have a quilt in the show and a quilt in the teacher exhibit.  Wren asked me to write a description for the quilt in the exhibit…. I struggle with this as  I am definitely not a writer. LOL  many of you may remember this quilt….. Hula Hibiscus.

Hula Hibiscus 2010

I was in a creative funk when Ronda K Beyer decided to do an online challenge.  She designed the center appliqué design and we were challenged to create a quilt with it… the caveat… we could only use the fabric from our stash… oh boy… I did not have a big inventory to choose from…

Final reveal

my inventory

So I dove in with both feet like I do most things, not knowing where it will take me.  I had the prettiest   ugliest fabric that I have no idea why I bought it.  It was a brown background with peacocks on it.  I must have been hallucinating when I bought it.  So I dug it out and cut it up, sewed it on, pieced some more etc…

There were many firsts in this quilt….

it was the first time I had done machine appliqué, which I now love…

it was the first time I had done paperless paper piecing, which I now love…

it was the first time I had done curved piecing, which I now love….

I learned so much on this one quilt with so many firsts, it is my favorite.  When it came time to show it, I was not expecting anything and was so pleasantly surprised to have it do so well… two Best of shows, some honorable mentions and a Founders Award.

This quilt could have been a complete failure with all of those first time techniques but I didn’t care!  Hmmm, failure… if we never try anything new where would that leave us….

Next time you think “I can’t do that”…… jump in with both feet!  you might just be surprised where you land.

Next quilt up….. “A Color of its Own”…. my first hand appliquéd quilt….

On Tap for Monday

It is a rainy drizzly day here in Pottstown.  Hopefully, the sun is shining where you are!   I always say I am truly blessed to be able to do what I love, that is not to say I LOVE every aspect.  Today is one of those days…. I am writing a pattern… ugh…  this is not my thing but it is necessary and I need to get better at it.  I believe that I have only ever followed a pattern a couple of times, I typically just start making blocks and see what happens.  I keep telling myself that I need to take notes as I am sewing but then I think…. nah, I’ll remember this.  Oh boy…. wish me luck as I have a couple to write.

Paducah is here!!  I wish everyone safe travels and loads of fun!  Jamie Wallen will be there and teaching.  If you are not familiar, where have you been?  He is an extraordinary person and teacher!  He will be at Paper Pieces Palooza at the Hexie House!  If you see him, tell him I said hello.  I hope to get to Paducah one of these days.

Golf season is finally here… though this rain is a killer.  I have been out twice now, just for nine holes.  Tomorrow begins my team matches… I am on the second team this year (thankfully, not the first as I was last year).  I will hitting the links at Concord CC tomorrow.  Wish me luck.

ok, I better stop procrastinating…. someone check on me later to make sure I am still at it.

Friday already…

where did the week go?

I was fortunate enough to get to go to AQS Lancaster on Wednesday afternoon.  I only made it to one floor of the exhibit so I am going tomorrow as well.  I missed my favorite booth…. Cherrywood Fabrics… hopefully, there will still be some fabric left when I get there.  I also got to have dinner with my friend Elaine on Wednesday.  We went to a wonderful little Irish pub around the corner from the convention center… for the life of me I can’t remember the name of it but it was delicious.

I am working on new classes for next year…. now, for those of you who know me… I am not a writer so it is pure torture to sit and write out class descriptions and handouts.. the fun part is teaching the classes.  I LOVE that part!  So, if any of you have some class ideas for me… I am all ears.

Started packing up some things for MQX…. it is right around the corner…. if you can’t make it to the east coast, I will be teaching at HMQS in Salt Lake City in May as well.  Hope to see you all in a classroom soon.

AQS Lancaster….

Well, I am off to day to Lancaster to see the show and have dinner with a friend.  So looking forward to it.  Wow, two quilt shows in 2 weeks.. how’d I’d get so lucky.

I posted a video on how to use my ProSpine rulers about a month ago, in case you missed it…

What’s interesting is I had just as many inquires about the “Hopper” I was using to draw with as I did about the ProSpine rulers.  So I wanted to let you all know that I have them up on my site if you are interested.  Check them out here.

I am off to the show….. I’ll have pictures on Friday.  🙂

Wise Words….

Well, here we are in March… can you believe it?  February seemed to fly by.  I hope you all enjoyed the Feather Tutorials.  I had a blast doing them.  Hope to see some of you at the Spring shows.  🙂

Angela Walters had some really good advice on her blog last week that I thought we could all use.  You can check out her blog here! If you aren’t following her…. you should be!   Here is her video which hopefully you’ll get as much out of it as I did.  Thanks Angela!
